In most cases, the pronoun is analyzed as a non-ratified topic expression and the NP as a ratified topic expression: the former is used to reestablish the referent as a topic of the new utterance, whereas the latter clarifies the identity of the referent, which is already ratified as a topic at this point of the utterance. Each phrase is located in its dedicated slot in the Ancient Greek word order template: the non-ratified topic expression at the beginning of the clause and ratified topic expression immediately after the verb, hence the discontinuity. This discontinuous topic construction is not to be confused with another similar one, in which the NP is a presentative focus expression; in the latter construction, the initial anaphoric pronoun may be an expletive topic expression. ; On rencontre en grec homérique des énoncés dans lesquels se trouvent à la fois un pronom démonstratif au début et un SN coréférent à la fin. Cette construction s’analyse, dans la plupart des cas, comme contenant à la fois une expression topique non ratifiée (le pronom) et une expression topique ratifiée (le SN). La première sert à rétablir le référent comme topique de l’énoncé qui commence, tandis que la seconde permet de préciser l’identité de ce référent, qui est déjà ratifié à ce point de l’énoncé. Chaque expression occupe alors la place qui lui est réservée dans le modèle d’ordre des mots du grec ancien : l’expression topique non ratifiée en début de clause, l’expression topique ratifiée en position immédiatement postverbale, ce qui explique la discontinuité. Il faut par ailleurs distinguer cette construction d’une autre semblable, dans laquelle le SN est en fait une expression de focus présentatif ;l’anaphorique initial doit s’analyser comme une sorte d’expression topique explétive.
